2010 INFO FOR ALL PLAYERS & PARENTS

Welcome back to all Families (new and old), I hope you all have enjoyed the Christmas and New Year break.  The Exies Acmy Basketball Club is looking forward to another exciting and most importantly enjoyable year of junior and senior competitive basketball.

The Exies Acmy Match Committee have been busy organising our teams for this season.  We have entered 14 junior boys and 13 junior girls teams.  As you can imagine it is an extremely difficult task coordinating such a large number of players and every effort has been taken to ensure children are playing in grades that aligns to their ability and development.  The teams will commence as selected although the match committee do have the authority to make adjustments if required.  Playing sport is a great way for children to form new friendship groups outside their school environment.

A number of teams this season have been selected with 8 / 9 players.  We have asked coaches to introduce a rotation system so that each week teams will play with 7 players (except for round one). Statistics over the past few seasons have shown us that majority of times teams have one person unavailable each week.  We are encouraging players and families to think in advance of when players will be unavailable so that rosters can reflect accurately (ie school camps, holidays, exeats etc).   All players will play finals. We were forced to give a number of walkovers last season due to players being unavailable for a variety of reasons.   We trailed this system in a number of team last season and found it to be very successful with many children have heavy sporting and school commitments.

Thank you to everyone who indicated assistance with either a coaching or team managers roles in 2010.  Both positions are voluntary and as a club we really appreciate your support.  The sharing of the scoring duties is also appreciate so we are again asking all families to contribute.  If you do not know how to score please seek out another parent - many parents are willing to teach/show others what to do.

Registration will be held at the Minerdome on Monday 1 February commencing at 4.15 pm and concluding 5.30pm.  If any parents are able to help on this evening please ring Tricia Curran or Colleen Punton.

If you  have any queries or concerns about club policies please seek out one of our very friendly committee members to assist you.

I look forward to seeing you all as the seasons commences.

EXIES ACMY HONOURS ITS MENTOR TRIO

THE COURIER 09/12/2009

BASKETBALL mentors Pam and Ken Mann and
Huck Gilbert have been honoured by the club they
guided into amalgamation almost 30 years ago.

Exies-Acmy has awarded life membership to the trio for their foundation work, playing and coaching careers and continued support with the club's basketball program.

Gilbert said they were humbled by the recognition.

"It's great to see the work we've done in the first instance carried on and to see how this has grown,''
he said.

Pam Mann, co-founder of Exies ladies' basketball club, and husband Ken, co-founder of Acmy (YMCA spelt backwards), said combining the clubs was a key part of survival.

Exies-Acmy was formed in 1981 with an emphasis on being a family club so parents could watch sons and daughters play and train together.Gilbert was named inaugural president.

All three were players and coaches at the club but Pam said each mostly acted as mentors nowadays.

Pam compiled a club history earlier this year and said it was fascinating to track the achievements of the club. "It makes us extremely proud that it still holds the same family values," Pam said. "We congratulate the executive committee for where the club has reached and the dedication on their behalf."

Kristy Jose, daughter of Exies co-founder Dawn Jose, presented Pam Mann with her life membership while former club secretary Jo Stevens awarded Gilbert.

AFL 100-gamer and former club member Jeff Dunne flew from Tasmania on five hours' notice to present Ken Mann.

EXIES ACMY WINS MAX BOWMAN
MEMORIAL SHIELD

BY TIM O'CONNOR, THE COURIER 14/10/2009

EXIES ACMY Basketball Club has finally got its hands on
the prestigious Max Bowman Memorial Shield.

The Ballarat club claimed the honour for the first time in
its history at the weekend’s Junior Club Championships
in Bendigo.

The feat also breaks a nine-year stranglehold on the
award by fellow Ballarat club Celtic Tigers.

Exies Acmy entered 10 teams at the two-day
championships, claiming success in both the under-12
and under-14 girls divisions.

The under-12 team was coached by Kristy Jose and the
under-14s by Sandra Burton.

Other strong results from the other eight teams
ultimately earned the overall honours.

Each club receives one point for each team entered (maximum of eight points) and also gains one point per victory and a further point per title won.

Front: Laura Cole;
Second row: Todd Douglass, Ben McDonald;
Third row: Sylvie Holmes, Emma Swift, Sam Gray; Fourth row: Nicole Brugman, Emma Hills,
Felicity Cole, Mitchell Gilbert.
Coaches: Sandra Burton & Kristy Jose at back.

Exies Acmy president Di Nevett said the shield had always been on the club’s radar, but had come ahead of schedule. ‘‘We were extremely excited when it was announced,’’ Nevett said. ‘‘(It was) something we had ultimately aimed for, but thought it would happen maybe in a couple (of) years’ time.

‘‘The coaches dedicate all their time voluntarily to coaching the juniors that went away and all the other juniors at the club. " ‘They do a fantastic job, it wouldn’t be possible without that, and a really strong club committee that we had to put it in place.

Nevett said her club had travelled to Bendigo hoping for a top-three finish, but would now be looking to defend its title when the championships make their way to Ballarat for the first time in 2010.

‘‘Certainly being at home, we will be looking to repeat it, but . . . everyone will be chasing us next year,’’ Nevett said.

SUCCESSFUL FINALS CAMPAIGN JUNE 2009
Congratulations to all our teams for their wonderful performances during the recent finals series of the 2009 Basketball Competition.

It is hard to remember the last time our Club has had such a successful finals campaign winning 8 premierships and being runner-up in a further 2 (one was against our other Exies Acmy team).

Our “Super Sunday” started in brilliant fashion with our U/11 A Grade Girls and Boys both victorious. The girls got away to a great start and with lots of enthusiastic parents, aunties and uncles and grandparents cheering them on managed a comfortable win against Celtic by … points. U/11 Boys coach Sharyn Canny did an exception job managing to rotate 9 boys and keep her team in front all day to record a …. point win against a tough Saints combination.

A highlight of the day was our two U/12 A Grade girl’s teams who made it through to the final. Both teams played at very high standard and the sportsmanship during and after the game was a credit to all players. Coaches Sandra Burton, Donald Bengtson and Kristy Jose have done an exceptional job with this age group and were justifiably rewarded with both teams making the final.

Not to be outdone by the girls, coach Sharyn Canny got the double with her U/12 B Boys dominating in their final winning by points against Saints. Exies Acmy got away to a great start and the result was never really in doubt A number of our boys played in both the U/11 and U/12 finals which puts us in a great position for the rest of the year. Well done to all!!
Our success continued in the U/14 A Grade girls. Coached by Sandra Burton, we had a convincing win against Celtic by points. With the girls getting away to a great start, all players got good court time. Sandra’s team looked incredibly well drilled and deserved their premiership and top of the ladder finish.

Our 16 Girls overcome a hurdle early with state representative Jane Douglass a late withdrawal due to injury. However this did not deter a much focussed group who clawed their way to victory. As the match progressed, the girl’s confidence soared and they ran out comfortable victors against Celtic by points.

In one of the “classics” of the day our U/16 B boys took victory by a point against Celtic. Coach Craig Dummett watched breathlessly as his son Sean went to the line with 15 seconds remaining and 1point down. Sean calmly proceeded to make both baskets and give his side a 1 point victory. The celebration’s of these boys was by far the most exuberant of all Exies Acmy teams during the weekend!!!

Our U/18 A girls came up against a bigger opponent in Celtic. Although we started well the baskets were just not dropping and Celtic got away to a sizeable lead in the first half. Coach Rod Whittle kept faith with his charges and the game slowly came back within reach. However the clock was against us and although we outscored our opposition in the second half it was not enough and we went down by 14 points. With all players either bottom age 18’s or from our U/16 side it was a remarkable achievement to make the final and the team will no doubt benefit from that experience in the future.

The last game of the evening saw our U/18 B Girls give coach Kristy Jose her second premiership for the day with a win in overtime by 5 points. This team has played consistently all game and Kristy was extremely proud of their finish to the season.

I would just like to take this opportunity to thank all players, parents, coaches and our very hard working committee for your contributions during the season. A Club can only function if they have the support of many people and it was very obvious on the weekend with a large number of our players and families that stayed at the Minerdome to support all of our sides that were competing.

To our players that did not make finals – work hard, listen to your coaches and your turn will come.

Enjoy the break !!

CONGRATULATIONS to Jane Douglass and Ella Burton for their recent exciting news at the U/16 State Camp held in Ballarat. Jane has been selected to represent Victorian Country in the U/16 team to play in the Australian Championships in Tasmania in July 2009. Ella has been selected as an emergency for the team also.
Exies Acmy are very proud of Jane and Ella's achievement. Both girls are hard working athletes and thoroughly deserve this latest honour.
